The Grand Traverse Show Chorus was chartered in 1954. The purpose of the Chorus is to provide an avenue for musical performance and education for women, and to promote and perpetuate the barbershop style of music. The chorus is one of about 22 in Region 2 of Sweet Adelines International, the largest international organization for women singing barbershop music. We are currently a Division A (small size) chorus; choruses in this division contain 12-30 singers. Our members have ranged in age from 17 to over 80!
Annual shows and regional competitions are a big part of chorus life. We have performed Christmas shows, and such themed shows as "Saturday Night at the Movies", "Mars & Venus", "AHA Moments", and the "TC Idol Contest" which drew quite a large audience and showcased some of the area's best young singers! Summer 2020 we had the huge honor of being the opening act for the world famous "Foreigner" band at our local Interlochen Center for the Arts! What a thrill that was! Since 1998, the chorus has consistently placed in the Top 3 of the Small Chorus "A" Division and top 5 overall in our Region. In 2016, the chorus took home the 1st place Small Chorus Gold Medal and placed 2nd overall among the 15 choruses competing in Region 2. This qualified us for the Harmony Classic Division A Competition in Las Vegas in 2017 where we placed as 4th in the world! We were fortunate enough to qualify again in 2019 for the same 2022 competition in Phoenix AZ and brought home a 4th place medal again! We are so proud and thrilled! |

OUR DIRECTOR

During 2011, the chorus said "hello" to Jill Watson as director. Jill completed the requirements to become a Certified Director with Sweet Adelines International in record time. In 2016, Jill became a Master Director with the organization having achieved a level of 612 points in the regional competition! A chorus member since 2002, she has worn many hats in the chorus: bass section leader, developing and teaching choreography, music team member, and designing and producing the show program, to name a few. Her enthusiasm and sense of fun are infectious. She also sings bass with Sashay Quartet, the 2016 Silver Medal Regional recipients and reigning 2022 Regional 3rd place Quartet.
In May of 2012, Jill won the "Novice Director of the Year Award" for Region II, Sweet Adelines International for receiving the highest score among novice directors that year. YEAH!

Come join the fun! It's a Different Girl's Night Out!

Being a chorus member is a fun and challenging experience. Each member has the opportunity to grow artistically and personally. There are opportunities for growth in vocal skills and musicianship, as well as various leadership and service opportunities within the organization. Costumes, theatre production, choreography, publicity, and administration are just a few areas where members find both challenges and rewarding experiences.
The Grand Traverse Show Chorus is a musical organization, providing an opportunity
for women to sing and to learn more about music in general, with focus on a cappella styles and techniques in particular. We are also a charitable organization. Members support a music scholarship program, The Young Singer's Foundation. Over the years, the chorus has supported (with both in-kind and cash donations) local breast cancer support groups, The Salvation Army, the Traverse City Public Schools music programs, and local nursing homes, food banks, and hospitals.
